Background

Airport Design Consult Ltd (ADC), was founded by Architect Richard Chapman in 2008 after 25 years as Airports Director at CCP, Woods Bagot, Ruddle Wilkinson and HOK in order to provide an independent Technical Advice Consultancy, filling the gap between Airport Architects and Airport Engineers. ADC brings a unique blend of pragmatic functionality and understanding of airport systems combined with a creative architectural vision.

Value

Because Richard Chapman has significant depth of experience he does not have to re-invent the wheel for each project. He is able to optimise and arrive at a solution or series of options quickly. His thinking and approach is focused and this means minimising his time and your costs, enabling ADC to offer a high value expertise at realistic fee levels, but without big overheads.

"Richard's core philosophy is to listen and learn from Clients and Stakeholders to understand their needs and aspirations to interpret them with one objective in mind; creating optimum value for all concerned"

Size

Terminal buildings by their very nature are often large and only fully occupied at peak times. This therefore makes efficient use and operational costs a challenging target. Terminals are also expensive to construct due to their size and complexity. This impacts on the operating costs and therefore the need to develop affordable buildings is even more pressing. It is essential that the terminal size is optimised to minimise the initial (and subsequent) investment, carbon footprint, energy consumption and overall running costs. Sustainability is now taken seriously and because the perception is that aviation is a major polluter, this is more critical than ever.

Asset Sweating

In existing terminal assets, we often find that there is a poor use of space because functional priorities, airline operating models and technology has changed over the years. This is particularly important with prime space which may not be being used, or optimised for prime functions such as passenger / baggage processing or revenue earning. ADC has significant experience of asset sweating to optimise utilisation, maximise capacity and commercial effectiveness within existing infrastructures.

Key Skills

Application of high level strategic thinking to develop a master plan/concept design and planning strategy for terminals, airside planning and commercial development.

Thinking outside the box and developing a genuine innovative design approach to deliver the best results for clients.

Integrating industry knowledge, current trends, creative functional design and international experience developing a strategy for moving forward; in short project definition.

Adopt a whole life approach and intelligent design at the beginning of a project to bring long term effectiveness and performance.

Being able to communicate with airport operational management/stakeholders and develop a brief/program from, in many cases, basic information.

Optimise terminal size to minimise the initial investment, carbon footprint, running and maintenance costs.

Managing project scope, documentation, work streams and client/stakeholder interface.

Developing efficient, cost effective and realistic solutions.
